The Story
Synopsis
A young girl, Cathar, horrifically physically and sexually abused by her father and brothers, finally wins her freedom after her mother is brutally murdered by her father. The canny mother had arranged for her daughter to leave the family home and join a nurturing family who would look after her.
Despite her trauma she falls for one of the brothers over time and they marry and begin a life together — yet disaster is not far behind as the potato blight takes hold and the Irish Famine begins.
She is pregnant as they walk to Drogheda to catch a boat for Liverpool, and gives birth in a hedgerow as another woman dies before her eyes after giving birth to her own dead child.

Case Study

- 01
The Brief
Build a multi-generational Irish Famine story without slipping into either misery porn or romanticised heritage cinema — anchored by an older woman whose dignity is the moral spine.
- 02
The Approach
I framed the entire saga through Cathar's gaze, letting the camera stay with her as the world around her shifts: abuse, marriage, blight, emigration, loss. The 'windows' of the title are literal and figurative — what she sees, what she refuses to look away from.
- 03
The Outcome
A feature screenplay currently in pre-production. Packaging conversations underway with Irish and UK production partners.
Themes
- Female resilience
- Famine & emigration
- Compassion as cost
- Witnessing
